Is Your Child Struggling in Class? How Miramar Parents Can Slow Down Nearsightedness with Myopia Control

If your child is squinting at the classroom board, moving closer to the television, or saying that distant objects look blurry, nearsightedness may be affecting how clearly they see at school. These signs do not automatically explain academic struggles, but uncorrected or progressing myopia can make classroom activities more difficult.

At 4Sight Optometry in Miramar, we provide pediatric eye care and myopia control options designed to correct vision while helping slow the progression of nearsightedness.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurry while close-up vision may remain clear. It often begins during childhood and can progress as the eyes continue growing.

Traditional single-vision glasses correct blurry distance vision, but ordinary glasses do not slow myopia progression. Myopia control takes a different approach by addressing both clear vision and the rate at which nearsightedness increases.

Slowing progression is important because higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased lifetime risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic maculopathy.

Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam

Children do not always realize that their vision is blurry because they may assume everyone sees the same way. Miramar parents may notice changes such as:

  • Squinting to see the board or distant signs

  • Sitting unusually close to screens

  • Complaining that faraway objects look blurry

  • Difficulty recognizing people or details from a distance

  • A glasses prescription that continues getting stronger

A failed school vision screening should also be followed by a comprehensive eye examination. Screenings can identify possible problems, but they do not replace a full evaluation by an eye doctor.

How Can MiSight Help Slow Myopia?

MiSight 1 day is a daily disposable soft contact lens that corrects nearsightedness while also slowing myopia progression.

FDA labeling specifies treatment initiation for children ages 8 through 12 with healthy eyes, myopia from -0.75 to -4.00 diopters, and no more than 0.75 diopters of astigmatism.

Because MiSight lenses are daily disposables, children use a fresh pair each day. They should not be reused, slept in, or worn while swimming or showering.

What Are Stellest Lenses?

For children who prefer glasses, Essilor Stellest lenses provide another myopia control option. These prescription eyeglass lenses correct blurry vision while using a specialized optical design intended to slow myopia progression.

Stellest lenses are FDA-authorized for children who are ages 6 through 12 when treatment begins and meet the appropriate prescription and eye health criteria.

This can make them a useful option for younger Miramar children or those who are not ready to manage contact lenses.

What About Low-Dose Atropine?

Low-dose atropine eye drops are also commonly prescribed for myopia control. The drops are generally used at home according to an eye doctor's instructions, often at bedtime.

Atropine for myopia control is an off-label use in the United States. Research supports its ability to slow progression in some children, although results vary. Possible side effects can include light sensitivity, near blur, or an allergic response.

Atropine does not correct blurry distance vision, so children still need glasses or contact lenses for clear vision.

Choosing the Right Myopia Control Plan

There is no single treatment that is best for every child. Age, prescription, progression rate, eye health, maturity, and daily routine all help determine which option may be appropriate.

Spending more time outdoors and taking regular breaks from prolonged near work can support healthy visual habits, but these steps do not replace prescribed myopia management when treatment is needed.
